Mosteiro dos Jeronimos Beautiful monastery! The architectural syle is known as Manueline. Mostly it involves every available surface being covered in carvings of rope, anchors, exotic plants and animals. All of this inspired, of course, by Portugal's extensive explorations and discoveries. Portugal's archictecture is also heavily influenced by the Moors. |

Climb on a ferry and cross the river to one of the suburbs... Here, on the top of a mountain overlooking the estuary and Lisbon is Cristo Rei - a giant statue of Jesus built in the 50's by public donation. (Portugal is still a very Catholic country.)

What a view! You can take an elevator up the 80 metres to the top of the base at the foot of the statue. Notice the shadow! |

Still on the base, looking up... He's 28 metres from fingertip to fingertip! |
